Hazardous Household Waste Disposal Project

The Hazardous Household Waste project on October 10, 2009 accomplished the first such collection in 10 years. Ir was held at the County Administration Building parking area on Church Street.

Contractor personel from Care Environmental Corp. were responsible for the safe handling of all hazardous materials. The primary concern of both contractors and Master Gardener volunteeers was the safety of those working at the site as well as those bringing materials such as: pesticides, poisons, corrosives, and other dangerous and unknown chemicals to the site.
Many Master Gardener volunteers were used for traffic control and assisting drivers in getting to the correct location for special items such as oil waste, batteries, and tires. They assisted in the collection of non-hazardous materials at points set at the site up by the County.
466 vehicles were processed between 9:00 and 2:00.
Master Gardener, Dr. Jim Weeks, spear-headed the effort to encourage the County to provide this opportunity to further protect our landfills and ground water from additional contamination.
